About Us

OUR HISTORY

ws.png

Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority Inc. is a national cultural sorority. We were established on March 9, 1995 at Binghamton University and here at Stony Brook University on February 28, 1998. We are the first Asian-Interest sorority recognized on this campus, but we are not Asian exclusive. Nationwide, our sisters represent over 50 different ethnicities and over 30 different native languages. We believe in Sisterhood, we provide Service, and we promote Cultural Diversity. Through many community service and philanthropy events, we help out communities in need. We strongly believe in educating others about Pan-Asian culture and while doing that, the sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda create life long bonds like no other.

Seven extraordinary women came together to establish Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. at Binghamton University on March 9, 1995. These seven founders: Elizabeth Choi, Karen Eng, Rei Hirasawa, Hee Cho Moon, Chae Yoo Park, Samantha Somchanhmavong, and Connie Yang united with a single vision of providing women with the chance to use their pride in their heritage to become leaders of society. Their mission was to unite young women of differing heritages and encourage them to make use of their strong voices and thoughts. This sorority is open to women of all nationalities and backgrounds who want to learn about, actively speak from and represent Pan-Asian culture. Our founding mothers not only channeled Asian American awareness through voice but also by extending their hands to the community through charitable works of both service-oriented and philanthropic natures. By doing so, they were able to make a real and impacting difference in the world around them. All the while, they were given the opportunity to educate others about the beauty and complexity of Pan-Asian culture.

THREE PILLARS

Sisterhood
Sisterhood

College is a time to explore ourselves but also to create lifelong relationships. Each sister is different in her own special way, but together as a sisterhood we all stand as one to share our hopes, dreams, troubles, and fears.

Service
Service

Contributing to the community and supporting important causes are core values of Kappa Phi Lambda. We place a heavy emphasis on service and are committed to giving back to out communities. We also uphold strong ideals of philanthropy adopting CARE, a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty as our national philanthropy.

Cultural
Diversity

Although we are an Asian/Asian American interest sorority, by no means are we non-Asian exclusive. We believe that by educating our community and our members about the beauty and complexity of Pan-Asian cultural heritage, we uphold the importance of understanding all cultures and enriching multiculturalism.
